El nombre de Sumpango es derivación Nahuatl y le fue dado en la época colonial con la llegada de los indios mexicanos. En Nahuatl , la palabra Tzompakco. Un Tzompantli era una estantería utilizada por lo religiosos donde se colocaban calaveras humanas y los ofrecían a los dioses. El municipio de sumpango es montañoso excepto en le área plan.
